The small Island at the corner
of Bellevue Hill Road and LaGrange Street has been removed to:
a) reduce the pedestrian distance across Bellevue Hill Road
b) encourage reduced speed as cars enter Bellevue Hill Road from LaGrange Street.
This is a collaborative effort by the City of Boston and the DCR.
The City Of Boston is funding the project as the DCR offers guidance and approval of the work being done on DCR property. The street and the sidewalk on Bellevue Hill Road are the responsibility of the DCR.
As this project progressed, it seemed the perfect time to request assessment of the sidewalk leading up Bellevue Hill Road from
LaGrange Street. The sidewalk has been a safety hazard for almost a decade and the scent/odor of methane under the concrete
has been evident for just as long a period of time.
At the request of Rep. Ed Coppinger, the DCR agreed to assess the sidewalk and determined that it should be replaced,
as it had not been properly installed, many years ago.
When the sidewalk concrete was removed the odor of methane from the gas pipes was fairly overwhelming.
In addition, 2 BWSC water gates were determined to be defective,
and a sink hole was identified near a BWSC sewer under the sidewalk.
The DCR Foreman called National Grid, and communicated with the
gas company representative to point out 3 areas of gas pipe damage. National Grid worked on LaGrange Street to identify the main pipes in order to fix the failed pipes on Bellevue Hill Road.
The Boston Water and Sewer Commission managed the sink hole in order to correct that problem.
The sidewalk has been be replaced, and the safety issues have been resolved.
We want to thank Rep. Coppinger for his swift action and taking advantage of the opportunity to correct a Public Safety issue which, when peeled back, exposed a number of other, equally serious issues.
And we want to thank the Teams from the DCR, Boston Water and Sewer Commission and National Grid for working together to resolve a series of important issues.
